There is a long history of anti-semitism in the church of which Martin Luther is a shocking and prominent example. The call of “Christ Killer” accompanied many horrendous actions against Jews in Europe but the facts speak a different story.

How can one blaim the Jews for his death when:

  • The Jews didn’t kill him
The Jews only executed by stoning and Jesus’ crucifixtion was ordered and carried out by the Romans. The Jewish leaders however did incite this because, for them, Jesus was a blasphemer.
  • Jesus was a Jew
Jesus and all the disciples were Jewish, how can we oppress all Jews as bad!?
  • Jesus was not murdered
John 10:18: No man taketh my life from me, but I lay it down of myself.
He surrendered died by a voluntary act of his own, was not “overcome” and yielded up his own spirit. It was his purpose and will.
  • His death was a victory
How can christian maintain that His death was a tragedy when it was His purpose and our salvation? Sure it was brutal but that’s the point – it was self-sacrifice in the name of love.
